Here comes Mr. Natural…

October 15th, 2007

Remember I was telling you of guys who have such natural abilities that they start training and their muscles seem to blow out of proportion so effortlessly? Well we have such a bodybuilder in the person of Serge Nubret.

Serge Nubret who is originally from Guadeloupe, won the title of Mr. Guadeloupe only after 3 months of training as a bodybuilder. That mind you, is an extraordinary gift from God. The thing is, other common mortals like us may not win our first bodybuilding contest in such a short time, but if we keep on training and improving, there is a title somewhere for us to be won!

I have seen very good bodybuilders, who have never won Mr. Olympia and in my mind they deserve to have won it at least once. But that doesn’t make them any less of a champion. Such bodybuilders would get best bodyparts, such as best arms or best legs, which is something altogether in such a prestigious competition.

Anyway, the sport of bodybuilding is not for the fastest or the one who can win his first bodybuilding contest in the fastest time! It is for us to enjoy and learn about ourselves and about life in general. It we can take the time to learn about how to build muscles and have a good and pleasing physique, we can also take the time to learn about our neighbours from next door or next state or province and educate ourselves from ignorance which in the long range will make us better bodybuilders and also a good humanitarian.

Now let’s go to the gym and do 4 sets of ben press followed by 3 sets of incline press…

Do bulging muscles come easily?

September 20th, 2007

You may have seen guys going around looking muscular all year round without too much in the way of weight lifting. Those guys make you sick ;)  They don’t have to do much and yet they have quite big bulging muscles.  That type of body is what you’d call a natural. They are just naturally muscular, in other word, they are the mesomorph type.  They can go to the gym and 6 months later, they can enter their first competition. It’s just that easy for them.

Most of us on the other hand, have to work quite hard at it and also make sure that we intake enough calories with the right amount of protein, carbohydrate and  some fat in order to grow at a reasonable pace.  Specially if you are an ectomorph like me. Ectomorphic bodies tend to be slender with less muscle mass. Developing muscles, specially large muscles tend to be quite a challenge.

<>Then we have the endomorphic body with somewhat heavy  rounded body often with a tendency to become fat. That type has to be concerned with less calorie but still with the right amount of protein in order the develop the muscle and burn the fat.

I do believe must of us already know what type of body we have. The point is, achieving success in bodybuilding is not solely dependent on your body type and metabolism, it depends on knowledge of the art of bodybuilding, nutrition, hard work and concentration. That can take you further than anything else.

Hard work, rest and grow bigger!

September 16th, 2007

After you have spent many hours at the gym training, you’ll definitely see many other upcoming bodybuilders and veteran bodybuilders as well. You’ll be offered advices from left and centre and that can get pretty confusing.  That is why you need a game plan,  a workout routine and a good diet.

Don’t try and start following a routine that is not yours. Remember that your body is unique therefore your workout as to be unique as well. Stick to the basic, don’t overtrain. Also make sure to start your workout with a 10 minute warming period so you don’t pull a muscle by accident.

You’ll definitely hear different advices from the differents at the gym, but you have to learn to listen and choose what seems to be good advices and forget about the rest. If right away someone is trying to embark you on some kind of drug (steroids) program to get you big right away, you know that is not something to take lightly.

The challenge is to do your muscle building naturally with all the natural supplements already available to bodybuilders. As you grow and mature, you’ll know the right path to choose in regard to your training and diet.

I want muscle and I want it now!

September 15th, 2007

Unless you are incredibly gifted with an amazing body to start with, you’ll have to put in lots of hours  in the gym before you start seeing some real muscle.  The more time you spend in the gym, provided you are doing your exercises properly, eating well and getting a decent 8 hours sleep a night, the more muscle you’ll develop.

Having read many articles about developing large muscles, one thing keeps coming back again and again from the bodybuilding gurus,  stick with the basic. That is, no fancy exercises when you want to grow. Do the basic, squat, deadlift, bench press, shoulder press, rowing and some curls to grow your biceps.

Nowadays, it is pretty easy to go online and look for instructions on how to perform all these exercises properly. Two to three sets of every exercises should suffice at first and between 6 and 9 reps (repetitions) should be ok.  Get a minute or two of rest in between sets.  If you take two long a rest, your body will start to cool off. Not a good thing, since that will put you at risk for injuries.

First of all, you’ll have to tailor an exercise program for your body type. Look for a gym around your area that is offering free membership and enroll for a week or so and get the personal trainer to tailor a program for you. Once you have a program, you are good to go.

After your workout, a good breakfast is in order. Whole wheat bread with 3 to 4 eggs,  a banana and some orange juice should boost your body  with some well needed fuel. Finish your breadfast with a glass of milk. Milk does the body good…remember the ad :)

So, you want to sculpt your body?

September 14th, 2007

Every kid, having watching the movie “Conan the Barbarian”,  wants to have the Greek god bodies that is shown by the actors in the movie.  The kid would likely go to the closest fitness store and buy his first set of bodybuilding home gym and start reading fitness and bodybuilding magazines that teach you how to build the body.

In my case, it was the movie Hercules with Reg Park that put the bodybuilding bug in me. Reg displayed such a phenomenal body that after that, I went to the local library and got copies of muscle building magazines and started reading like a maniac.

Armed with the basic of bodybuilding and my new set of weights, bought from the local fitness store, I started to tackle the daunted task of adding fresh muscle to my tall and quite skinny body.

Sculpting a body is not only about exercises and food, it is a science. A science that you need to learn and keep on learning likely for the rest of your life. first of all, you have to learn about your body, since not two people has the same body genetic.
